Continuing the series, the five artists under the spotlight this time are an incredibly talented bunch of artists who glue together the indian independent music scene and fuel our aim to showcase fresh and fun talent from all across the country.
Avanti Patel is a singer-songwriter from Mumbai who has appeared on a number of talent shows including Indian Idol, India’s take on American Idol. She started her musical journey at the early age of 5 and learned Hindustani classical music. In May 2010, Avanti released her first solo album in her teens. In 2015, Avanti debuted in the field of playback singing by lending her voice to a Gujarati film and went on to start her own music project reviving old classical songs. She has also sung with the likes of Shankar Mahadevan.
Adith Anande is an India-based filmmaker and music composer who has developed ad films for a number of brands such as M.A.C., Amazon Prime, and Ola. His original and independent work has been nominated and has won multiple awards across various film festivals around the globe garnering appreciation from the likes of Ryan Gosling and Johnny Jewel. He currently heads the music division at Schbang, one of India's top Independent Ad Agencies and is also part of Bombay Noor, a music collective creating new age classical music. Adith was one of the 12 global musicians chosen by FAMLABS (British Film Institute) to spend a week immersed in an exploration of the rich potential for collaborative film, archive, and music projects.
Pune singer-songwriter Karshni Nair, who goes by her first name alone, started putting out music on Soundcloud in 2019, the free music streaming site which has birthed many music giants such as Billie Eilish and Post Malone. From her first single itself, her voice showed a sense of maturity like well-seasoned crooners, giving her an edge in the industry. Her hauntingly beautiful single ‘daddy hates second place’ gained her critical as well as mass appeal, striking a chord for Asian kids dealing with their parents’ daunting expectations. She also put out an acoustic-electro track titled “Gurl” under her new moniker babiecinno in January 2021.
Bangalore-based Sai Menon is an up-and-coming rapper and hip hop producer who is known for his Kannada lyricism and along with Gubbi has helped in expanding the Bangalore hip-hop scene and its audience. His famous singles include Chitaal Pathaal with Raghu Vine Store and Gubbi, and Aksharamaale (Kannada Alphabetical Rap) featuring Gubbi.
Anway Gangawane is a versatile artist from Mumbai and is known for his covers of various Indian classical songs. He describes his sonic aura as “unconventional”. He is trained and has experience in Hindustani classical music for 10+ years and works as a vocalist, composer, and songwriter in advertising and short films. In addition, he works with the music collective Bombay Noor, who make new age classical music, and his recent work, the short film ‘Bhardol’ was selected for the 22nd Mumbai Film Festival.
